Comic reviews - Amazing Spider-Man #543, Halo: Uprising #1, StarLord #2, Countdown 36, Superman #666

Amazing Spider-Man #543
I thought that the conclusion of the Back in Black 5 part arc would be something fantastic. The cover was revealed a while back, and as you can obviously see it got people speculating all over the message boards on what it could mean... well, as it turns out, it's nothing really special, and no where near fantastic. If you've been collecting the five part series so far, then you should obviously get it to finish it, though if not then you should certainly pass then one.

I'm just going right out and saying it, so note that if you are wierd about spoilers, then don't read - Aunt May doesn't die! SHOCKS! A dissapointing issue that looks at how Peter is a criminal, and he goes as far as knocking out a cop... bleh, this one may have been dissapointing - though the next arc - One More Day, certainly WON'T be!

6/10

Halo: Uprising #1
Wow, is this issue really Halo? I read it, and it just didn't feel like a Halo story line to me! Meh, none-the-less the writing and story is okay and the art, while not as good as some of the previuos Halo comics, is still nice. The book was written by Brain Bendis, who is currently being noted as Marvel's main man right now. He's heading both Avengers story, and not to mention Ultimate Spider-Man. He didn't seem to put many, well, you know - words in this issue, which Marvel tends to do a lot. Still, you should check it out if you're 1. A fan of the series and 2. If you're wanting to get a comic that will someday, probably be a collector's item.

7/10

StarLord #2
Here we go! Last month this was my favorite book, and this month seems to be the same. As mentioned in my review of StarLord #1, it's a shame that this will only be four issues long. The artwork is currently some of my favorite, and the characters are all just so lovable.

Two main characters die in this issue, one certainly, though another might, and probably will come back since you didn't really see him/her/it (not spoiling) die, and while you saw the other one getting blown up.

It's a shame that comics like the two others above will sell out, while this one certainly won't sell nearly all of them, maybe not even half of what the stores get. So please - if you're trying to find a new comic, do yourself a favor and check this (and the previous one) issue out, you (probably) won't be dissapointed.

10/10 (I just had to!)

Countdown 37
This issue wasn't horrible like most are, as it actually went somewhere with the storylines. As always, I couldn't care less about the Karate Kid storyline, though the others are pretty good. I really don't care about the art, often times the character models look pretty, ehh, ugly.

Even though some of the story lines can be interesting, I just really don't care about the characters they chose to focus on. The only one that non-fans may even partically recognize is Atom Man, though maybe not even him.

6/10

Superman #666
Just as they did with Batman's 666 issue, Superman is also getting a Hell themed one for his 666, and it's not a dissapointment. For those who remember, I really didn't care for Batman #666, and gave it a 6/10. I thought that the same thing would end up happening with this issue, though I was wrong - it's pretty good.

Most of the issue focuses on Superman's dream, and in it he goes mad and starts to kill. I'm not going to spoil it for you and reveal what happens next - you'll just have to read it yourself. But it's pretty interesting. The art was pretty good, oddly my favorite design was the demon near the very end of the comic.

Comic reviews - Booster Gold #1, Countdown 37, Ultimate Spider-Man #112

Alright, this is a week late, so I'm sorry. It's sad that I'm writing this as all the new comics are coming out... But none-the-less, it's gotta be done, so here I go-

Booster Gold #1
Booster Gold was a classic Justice League character in my opinion, and while he sadly desides not to join the team in this issue, it's still great to seem him coming back. It still has the classic charm as before, and the characters, including his many greats grandfather (he's from the future, btw), are just perfect for the series. The art isn't perfect, though that doesn't mean it's not brilliant. The writiing, on the other hand, is nearly perfect... Awww, I just loved this issue!

9/10

Countdown 37
Last week's issue was one of the few great issues of Countdown, and while I thought that they'd maybe, just maybe continue to be good, this one just isn't! The plot seriously goes no where, and the big "shock" was that someone found out someone's identity, which I trully couldn't care less about. The character featured in the story are just not that great, at first I like the Trickster and Piper, though it's all just a big "meh" now. Oh well....

5/10

Ultimate Spider-Man #112
Alright, first thing first, the most important part of this issue is the art for an obvious reason - after 111 issues, the original artist has left, and a new one has come in. Like a lot of people, I was worried it wouldn't be for the better, and like many series (I'm looking at you, Ultimate Fantastic Four), it just goes downhill in terms of art. Thankfully, I like the style of the new artist, and while I wouldn't say it's better than Mark's, I wouldn't say it's worse either.

The story is a beginning of a new arc titled "The Death of a Goblin", which I don't know about you, but I think will be an awesome story. So far, though, the Norman Osborn story didn't go as far as I wanted, though the fact that the cover of next month's issue has the Goblin on it (and nothing else) is a good sign that he'll be a major part (obviously as expected). I also like this Kitty Pryde issue going on with Peter Parker, though I'm sure it'll all just end with Peter going back to Mary Jane.

Marvel Characters - Venom

Back in the 80's Spider-Man obtained a black suit that ended up being an alien being. The being, best known as Venom, or even the symbiote, tried to bond with Peter Parker, though ultimately, once he realized the power it held, he discarded it. However, the symbiote was long from dead, in fact, after being rejected by Parker, it latched itself onto Eddie Brock, who worked for the Daily Globe. He was fired from his job after he identified the wrong man as a murderer, which Peter noted to the newspaper's editors. The depressed man also had a bad case of cancer, and at one time decided to comit suicide. However, once the symbiote merged with Brock, his cancer went away, and the man became a powerful enemy.

Though within time, his cancer returned, so he sold the suit to a crime boss, who gave it to his son. The son was infected by it, and he went off to kill Spider-Man. While battling him, the symbiote neglected it's new victim, and deserted him. After this, the man fell to his death.

The current Venom is Mac Gargan, who was previously known as the Scorpion. As Venom, he is much more powerful and deadly then before.

Spider-Man movie trilogy announced for Blu-Ray.

The Spider-Man movies have been, obviously, some of the most successful super hero movies of all time. The first was great, the second was outstanding, andl, well, the third was, frankly, crappy, though that shouldn't make you hate the first two. It's great that we're going to be able to see the whold trilogy on Blu-Ray... or atleast those who have it (I don't).

Anyway, here are the details - The DVD set will include Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3. It will be released on October 30th of this year, alongside the DVD release of the third film. It'll include tons of bonus content, including 11 featurettes that deal with the making of all three movies...

Marvel Characters - Spider-Man

Real name: Peter Parker
First appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15

Prior to the events that would change his, and his families' lives for ever, his parents died in a plane crash when he was just a kid. Once the event happened, his aunt May and uncle Ben took care of him. Peter Parker was a fifteen year old kid when he was bit by a radioactive spider that gave him amazing abilities. Within just a few hours after he was bit, he found out that he was able to climb up walls, among other abilites as well.

With these powers, he started to go into show buissness to show them off, and also created a costume as well. One night after a show, a burglar was fleeing, and the security guard asked him to stop him. Peter did nothing, and the criminal got away. Soon later the man that got away killed Peter's Uncle Ben. Knowing this, Peter felt terrible guilt, and swore to use his powers to fight crime.

About the same time that Peter obtains his spider-abilities, super criminals are on the loose and are causing havok, including Doctor Octopus, The Vulture, The Green Goblin, and even Fantastic Four baddy Doctor Doom.

Also with his abilities, he is able to take outstanding pictures of himself while battling enemies, which he sends into the Daily Bugile for big bucks (however, no one knows his true identity at this time, and he claims that he's just a good friend of Spider-Man).

During the series' history, Spider-Man married Marry Jane, and also became one of the world's best known super heroes. In the real world (you know, the one that you and I live in), he has been deemed as one of the most popular super heroes, and as Marvel's official mascot.

POWERS
Spider-Man has trully uniqe and original powers that are no part of the cliched abilities that most super heroes have (i.e. Flying, Elastability (sp?), shapeshifter, ect...). Some of his more notable abilities include being able to climb up walls, shoot out webbing, which he can use to swing all over town, grasp onto enemies and pull them in, trap people, and more. His spider-sence allows him to sence oncoming projectiles, enemies, cars, pretty much anything. He also has increased strength, speed, and agility.

ComicCon 2007 - Spectacular Spider-Man TV series!

Earlier in the week we were able to get a glimpse of a teaser poster which showcased some popular Spider-Man villains and, of course, Spider-Man himself, webslinging through New York at night. Well, today Marvel revealed a 45 second clip of the up and coming series, though sadly it hasn't been released to the public yet.

According to sources, the trailer started out with the ever popular and totally overused line - "With great power, comes great responsibility". Next came some action sequences which featured Spider-Man beating up some robbers. Later on in the trailer, you apparently see Doc Oct's four tentacles spring out at Spider-Man, followed by references or images of Electro, Green Goblin, Vulture, Sandman, and of course - Venom.

Comics to get this week!

Batman #666
The 666th comic in the Batman series is definitely a book to get. The concept of the book - Grant Morrison puts Batman in the future and makes him fight the anti-Christ. Obviously the reason they decided to bring this epic fight to this issue is mainly because 6 is an imperfect number and often refereed to as the devil (more commonly used though is 666, just like the perfect number - 7, is often times, possibly even more so than the standard one digit number, used as 777). I'll post a review of the book later on in the week, maybe tonight (because I've already got it).
Amazing Spider-Man #542
Here's another obvious one. The final issue in the "Back in Black" series is coming to an end with a battle against Kingpin and of course the webslinger himself. Be sure to pick this one up, and also, if you're able to find the Back in Black part 1 issue, tell me, I LOST MY FREAKIN ISSUE! Yes, that's right, I'm going nuts right now going through my house, though no such luck yet...

ComicCon 2007: Spider-Man movie news? What's this?

Marvel just sent me an email which included news and a poll. I checked out the poll which said the following:

"What potential San Diego ComicCon news are you anticipating most?"

One of the answers was: "Big movie news! Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Spider-Man! Anything!"

Hmmm, a confirmation of Spider-Man 4? Probably not...

ComicCon 2007: First Spectacular Spider-Man images... or atleast poster

The poster for the upcoming TV series Spectacular Spider-Man has been released. On the poster you can not only see Spider-Man, but a few familiar villains as well, including the Sandman, Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, and the electric enemy (I forgot his name, though I do know he had an awful suit!). Maybe the Sinister Six will strike back?

ComicCon 2007 - Spider Man: Brand New Day mystery artist!

IGN has been covering this mystery artist thing dealing with Spider-Man - Brand New Day. For those who don't know: THere is a new artist that will start to draw the Amazing Spider-Man comics, though Marvel is not saying who it is. All they're doing is releasing images which have caused fans to speculate. Well, today Marvel released two new images, so check them out.

Best of the Best: Superhero comic book movies!

The following is a list of my five favorite super hero comic book movies! Some of them may be obvious, though some will probably surprise you. Check it out!

#5: Men in Black - Yes, you may not know this, but Men in Black was originally a comic book. The movie is a classic comedy, and one that I just had to include.
#4: V for Vendetta - It's probably debatable whether or not a terrorist can be a super hero, though I think once you watch the movie for yourself you will come to the obvious conclusion that V is definately one... Get your own tree!
#3: Spider-Man - While not as surpurb as the sequel, the original is stil a classic that will surely go down as one of the best movies of all time... or, maybe not...
#2: Batman Begins - It's commonly known that the 90's Batman movies were some of the worst comic book movies of all time. Thankfully, in 2005, WB made the Batman series good again by releasing Batman Begins.
#1: Spider-Man 2 - I'm sure this was quite expected, seeing just how genius this movie was. You trully felt like you were in the crowd just watching Spider-Man go and save the day. Doctor Octopus was played wonderfully, and the acting was actually pretty good. It's also surprisingly better than the orginal.
