Donkey Kong is an ape that's sole item of clothing is a red tie that says "DK" on it. Miyamoto, the creator of the character, clearly stated that Donkey Kong is "stupid", though from what I've seen he's the smartest ape, like ever!DK was assumingly a happy monkey that lived on a peaceful island, though someone, probably Mario, kidnapped him stuck him in a cage. Obviously DK was angry, so he broke out, stole Mario's girl friend, and climbed to the top of a construction site. Mario climbed back up to save Pauline, and also defeated the stubborn ape. Years later the two put their differences behind and have good manners toward each other. Besides, DK has bigger problems concerning the Kremlings, whom happen to steal their bananas. Obvoiusly anyone would go on a mad rampage when something like that happens, so DK kills many of his reptile enemies to get back his snacks...
Recently, DK has gone completely insane again (reminds me of the Hulk - First bad, then good, then bad again) once he saw cute little Mario toys on the TV. He steals everysingle one of them, and Mario, once again, has to go defeat him. Soon later DK falls in love with Pauline, and as in the orignal game, kidnaps her, only to be, once again defeated.
Despite all of this, DK is still considered a protagonist rather than an antagonist...
