Review: Hairspray!

Reviewing movies is an incredibly hard task. You have to take into consideration every aspect of the film, and unless you're packed with cash and have an unbareable patience for watching movies all day long, you are only able to watch it once. And with that said, you often times aren't able to take into consideration the downpoints of the film unless their completely obvious, such as the mistakes found in recent films like Evan Almighty and in Transformers (such as the completely useless and uncompfortable quote: "Criminals are HOT!"... yah...).

Well, the thing about Hairspray is you don't need to see it more than once to know that this is an outstatnding and amazing film. But with that said, that doesn't mean I won't see it multiple more times, because I surely will.

The movie is based on the original movie that was released years prior and the Broadway musical that was first shown in 2002. Just like the two previous projects, John Waters is heavily involved in this movie, and during the beginning appears in it (as the flasher). The story revolves around ethnic and prejudice difficulties that were common time in the 1960's (when the movie takes place), though unlike the past - it adds lots and lots of music that makes you just want to jump up and dance! Nothing is particularly offensive to anyone, or atleast wasn't supposed to be...

The actors are wide-ranged and each do a notable part at playing their characters. They all seem to hit the spot perfectly, though I do have a few minor gripes with Travolta's portrayal of Edna: In the original film and in the musical, she had a lovable yet scratchy voice that fit perfectly, though this time around John Travolta tries to add a softness to it, which ultimately turns flat... thankfully though it wasn't drastic. Even if her (or his, mind you) voice wasn't Edna like, it did have a great Baltimore feel to it, clearly shown when the character says such things as "iron" and so on.

Seriously, this is one of those few summer movies this year that are must-sees. While Chuck & Larry basically fails to deliver any notable comedy, Hairspray more than makes up for it by not only adding tasteful humor, though also having a fun and cute story and wonderful music. Transformers isn't for everyone, Chuck & Larry is probably for no one, so it's good to see one of my favorite musicals get a great film that surpassed my high expectations!

Overall score - 9.3/10

Harry Potter rush

That picture above is taken from the midnight release of Harry Potter in San Francisco. That was probably how it was every where in the world when it was released yesterday. While I'm not going to read it, and while I'm not interested in it, I just thought I'd share the above picture with you all. Pretty amazing...

CJayC, creator of Gamefaqs, will be leaving the company

Yes, I'm sure you've atleast heard of the man once. The famed creator of Gamefaqs, the largest strategy site on the internet, is calling it quits. Jeff Veasey founded the company way back in 1995... the year the Playstation was released in America, and a year prior to the Nintendo 64's release.

This is what he had to say about it -

"When I first started GameFAQs in 1995, I didn't have a clue as to what would lay ahead. I didn't create the first FAQ-writing community (that was USENET), I wasn't the first to gather them all in one place (that was Andy Eddy and the Brawl Archives), I was just the first to try to make a navigable web site out of them. A weekend of work on AOL, and it all began.

The first few years were full of steady growth, and by the summer of 1999, I was ready to take the plunge. I quit my "real" job, and turned to working on GameFAQs full time. The ability to focus on the site allowed me to create the message boards, and almost four years after the original site was launched, the boards went live, and ended up driving the site to a huge amount of popularity.

By 2000, in the middle of the first dot-com boom, I was more than happy to ride that huge wave of advertising. I saw several compatriots sell off their sites and retire in luxury, and I was happy for them. I saw several others sell off their sites for shares in a private corporation that was going to be big except that it wasn't, and I was sad for them. Me, I just wanted to ride the wave for as long as I could.

And "as long as I could" hit right around the Spring of 2003, when I was working 80-hour weeks, getting little sleep, and having to deal with the usual rigors of running a one-man business. It was about to finish me off, and there was no way I could continue to keep going the way I was; that's what led me to sell the site to CNET in the summer of 2003.

Times with CNET were much better, almost perfect, but not quite. We've had plenty of good times and bad. We fixed old problems, and created new ones. Some major mistakes, and never enough make-up to make everybody happy. But, if you look at our traffic growth since CNET took over, it's hard to say that anything is too terribly wrong the way things are going.

The next year, GameFAQs got its second full-time employee with Allen "Sailor Bacon" Tyner, who has been indispensable in picking up what I couldn't keep going. He's actually got my dream job, staying behind the scenes, never getting in anyone's way, and being there every time I needed him. Which wasn't often enough, as I still, 11 and a half years later, tried to do everything by myself.

Last year, at E3 2006, I got the first big feeling that the world was starting to move on without me. I didn't just feel like I was one of the oldest people there; I was reminded of it constantly. Flashes of "No way that kid's 18" and "This music's too loud" and "Get off of my lawn" flew through my head. In the GameSpot booth, as I still knew and talked with some of the usual crowd, I couldn't help but notice that I was feeling even older. Many of them were years younger than me, and I found I had just had less in common with them than I had in years past.

When I got back to the hotel, I looked in the mirror and said to myself, "Are you really going to still be doing this when you're 60? Or, much less, when you're 40?"

And so, as the Summer of 2007 rolls around, I feel like it's time for GameFAQs to move on, and I'm the one holding it back. Or is that vice versa? GameFAQs was never truly my site, or CNET's site, but your site, as it belongs primarily to its contributors, and how they choose to contribute shapes what GameFAQs is today. I was the first glue that held this conglomeration together, but glue wears out, and I do too.

And so yes, today, I am announcing my eventual departure from GameFAQs.

I say eventual, because this isn't a two weeks notice, but it is the first step in my stepping aside to let this train move on with out me. I like my exits slow and subtle, fading out slowly until there's nothing left. I don't want anyone to actually notice the true day I leave, and I want things to keep running just they are today, just not by me.

A lot of changes have already happened over the past few years, but most folks probably didn't notice. Allen already handles over half of the daily submissions onto the site, and he'll be taking over the rest as the new Editor of GameFAQs. Allen has been with GameFAQs almost from the very beginning, first as a contributor, then as a moderator, and then as my Associate Editor. He's proof that hanging out on gaming websites can actually do good things for your career. I had Allen picked out ages ago as someone I wanted to work with, and if I've got to hand over the reins, they couldn't be in better hands.

Most of the work on the GameFAQs boards has long been in the hands of our volunteer moderation staff, and of course that isn't going to change. For the administrative end of things, I'm hoping that there will be a dedicated GameFAQs boards administrator to take over in time, although Allen will be taking the lead there for now as well. GameSpot also already has a full data team designed to handle those kinds of submissions to the game database we already share, and I'm sure they'll be happy to have me watch over them to make sure that they can handle my own current daily queues with the same level of craftsmanship.

Where does that leave all of you? Well, this site was never about people helping GameFAQs, or people helping me, but gamers helping gamers. I've written my own guides for the site over the years, and it was never about any kind of reward except knowing that I made gaming even more fun for whoever read my guide. I hope that's why most of our contributors do the same, and that hasn't changed, and won't change. The boards aren't being dismantled, nothing is shutting down, and I doubt the large majority of the site's visitors will notice a thing.

So, what happens to GameFAQs? Again, not a lot. People didn't come here for me, and I certainly hope nobody leaves for me. I have nothing but good feelings for CNET, who, through all our joint successes and goofs, have been nothing but good to me, and who have listened to me when I've wanted to keep the current directions of GameFAQs going to where they are today.

And what happens to poor little old me? Well, like I said, I'm not disappearing overnight. There are a several projects out there that I simply haven't had the time to implement that I want to go live before I go: Screenshots, for one. I've also promised some changes to how reader reviews work on the site, and I want to make sure that the Character Battle is good to go for everybody next month. My goal is to slowly make myself obsolete, something most tech workers dread, but something I plan to welcome with open arms.

And so, the long goodbye begins. This is not the end of me, and definitely not the end of GameFAQs, but it is the beginning of my end. I've raised you well, GameFAQs. Now go, make me proud. *sniff*"

Hehe! While filming a commercial for Project Gotham Racing 4, their Ferrari crashes!

Wow, while filming the ad for the Xbox 360 game Project Gotham Racing 4, their Ferrari F430 crashes. No explosions sadly, and no one died... So while it may be funny, it wasn't exciting!!!

For the record that was a joke...

I'll post a new review of Hairspray tonight.

In a few hours (well, sometime today, I don't really know when), I'll be seeing the new Hairspray film, and will thus write a review sometime today. Also, I'm sorry that I haven't been doing my daily features latley. Yesterday I went golfing and saw 'Hello Dolly!' with my family, which happend to be an hour away from my town (I was gone for like, 7 hours total yesterday, maybe even longer). While they were both fun, I swear I feel like I broke my neck while golfing, and going out of town to see a musical which happend to be outside as well didn't help my acking (is that how you spell it?) neck!

Anyway, I'm hoping I'll be able to have an enjoyable time at the movie sometime today, and I'm also hoping I'll be able to dine at Olive Garden or Red Robin, as either one of those sounds delish right now.

Alright, enjoy the day, read your Harry Potter, play your VC version of Paper Mario, and go out and see HAIRSPRAY!!!

After this week, I think I'll hold out on watching and seeing musicals for a few months. But, wait, oh, I forgot, my family wants to see some dancing show too in two weeks... man, I've got to bring my Nintendo DS, I don't think I'll be able to take any more of these...

New NFL game features O.J. Simpson, Take-Two gets more controversy

Take-Two is without a doubt the company with more controversy than any other company in the entire world. Almost every game they publish, whether it be Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, or Bully, they always seem to get plenty of controversy, mostly from ignorant Jack Thompson.

Well, Take-Two is now getting more controversy, but this time from a game you wouldn't expect. In Pro Football 2K8, they're including O.J. Simpson, alleged murderer, (who more than likely did it!) as a playable character.

Yahoo says that Stephen Spielberg and Aaron Sorkin are teaming up.

According to Yahoo! News, Stephen Spielberg (E.T., Jurassic Park, Jaws, Indiana Jones, etc...) and Aaron Sorkin (Studio 60, The West Wing, etc...) are going to team up and create movies. Soarkin will be writing the scripts, while Stephen will be producing and directing them.

Rumor: Metal Gear Solid 4 still might come to 360!

According to Official Xbox magazine, a "bankable source" is telling them that Metal Gear Solid 4 is certainly coming to the Xbox 360 a few months after the PlayStation 3 version's release.

Also according to them - The game is being developed by a seperate team, and is not being headed by Hideo Kojima.

Final Harry Potter book released tonight at 12.

I've never in my life read a Harry Potter book. I've never wanted to, never thought of doing it, and I've never even bothered watching one of the movies, even if it were on TV. I don't really have any thing against the series, and if I did that'd be wierd seeing I know nothing of it, other than the fact that millions of people do, and millions of people are going to go crazy tonight once they see who will die (according to Rowling, there are two main characters who die).

Oddly, despite the fact that everything I previously said... I just NEED to know who dies, I really do. I've been waiting for this day, even though I don't know anything about him. I seriously think that this will be the day, or atleast tomorrow will be the day, when the internet will implode.

I trully am guessing that Harry Potter won't die. Why? I don't know, I just have that sneaking feeling that he just won't. I'm not going to say who I think will die... mainly because I really don't know any of the characters except Harry, red head boy, and girl... and some white haired old timer... Though if I had to guess, it'd be one of those characters! Alright, moving on...

New movies this week!

In all there are two major motion pictures this week, only one of which is supposed to be any good. Other than that, though, there are some lesser known movies that are raking in some good review scores from multiple critics.

*Hairspray (rated PG) - The only movie I'm seeing this week, and the one that's supposed to be really good. I'm sure you may've seen or atleast heard of the movie which was released a good 16 years ago, though the thing about that film is the fact that it wasn't a musical, and the new movie is (songs taken from the 2002 broadway musical). Once I see it, I'll post up a review.

*I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (rated PG-13) - Bleck, I knew this film would be a stinker. It stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James as they pretend they're a gay couple despite the fact that they're *gasp* straight! Yah, this one is a film to pass!

Other Movies

*Your Mommy Kills Animals (rated R)
*Sunshine (rated R)
*Cashback (rated R)
*Goya's Ghosts (rated R)
*Falling for Grace (rated PG-13)
*Prisoner (not rated)
*Live-In Maid (not rated)
*Scrap Heaven (not rated)

Bully remake announced for the Wii and 360.

Yes, only a remake, and thus nothing to get really excited about. Though still, if you haven't already played the orginal, then you should definately hold out and buy either of these versions. If you're a fan of graphics, then obviously buy the Xbox 360 version, but if you want some new gameplay innovations then try out the Wii verson.

Developer of the day: Level-5

Level-5 is a video game development studio known for making classics such as Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Dark Cloud (and it's sequel, which s often times considered even better), the Professor Layton series, Rouge Galaxy, and the upcoming, highly anticipated Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS.

They're best known for making RPG and puzzle styled games, and made their first full fledged video game with the release of Dark Cloud. The aforementioned game was published by Sony, whom went on record as calling it a Zelda killer. While that obviously didn't come true, it's still a highly notable game that is enjoyed by many.

After making the sequel to Dark Cloud, SquareEnix allowed the company to create the 13th game in the Dragon Quest series, which ended up being a huge success, obtaining three 10s and one 9 from Japanese magazine Famitsu.

Later on, they created more games including Rouge Galaxy and the cult classic Professor Layton series. As already stated, they are currently working on the 14th game in the Dragon Quest series, which will be the first Dragon Quest game (in the main series) to appear on a handheld console.

Best games of all time: Super Mario World

Super Mario World is a SNES video game that was released during the consoles launch. There are multiple things that make the game so perfect. The gameplay is tight and spot on, and the new power-ups, not to mention the brilliant addition of Yoshi added more to the sidescrolling Mario series then probably any game following or preceding this one, other than of course the original Super Mario Bros. The game has been noted by many as one of the greatest platform games of all time, and that position still stands despite games like New Super Mario Bros. and others being released.

The story is simple and nothing other than simple - Princess Peach, Mario, and Luigi are going to Dinosaur Land via a balloon for a nice vacation. Mario just saved the princess previously when he traversed the eight kingdoms to save all of the transformed kings and save the princess at the end, so it's good to have a rest.

Typically, Bowser has already returned and has planned to use the oil resources on Dinosaur Land to go big. He incased all of the Yoshies, the island's inhabitants, into eggs, and has already started to claim the island as his own by putting his children in charge of seven of the separated lands.

Once Bowser learns that the princess he desires so much has arrived on the island, he quickly orders her to be kidnapped, and she is within minutes of arriving. Now, the brothers must go through this new area in search of not only the princess, but also the trapped Yoshies once they learn of them.

Now on the subject of Yoshi, let's talk about his special abilities and what he contributed to the outstanding series. You'll find Yoshi within a few minutes of playing. Once you do, you'll then be able to perform Yoshi's abilities, which include being able to eat most enemies. Also, depending on the Yoshi color you're currently riding, you'll be able to use special moves once you collect certain Koopa Troopa shells.

Super Mario World quite possibly be my favorite game of all time. If you haven't played the game, then go out and do so. If you have the game but haven't found all 96 exits, then do so now.

NOTE: NOT YET FINISHED!

Battle of the games! Week 1!

Alright! I've got three new polls up now. One of them is for Nintendo, another for Microsoft, and then Sony. At the end of the week, the game with the most votes in each poll will then face off in final poll to see which is the best upcoming game, or atleast the one people are most looking forward to.

Poll closes, Mario Kart Wii wins by a lot!

*Mario Kart Wii - 26 votes, 54%
*Release Dates - 16 votes, 33 %

Greatest Games of All Time feature starting tomorrow!

I really enjoy doing the Anticipated game of the day articles, so starting tomorrow, I'll be doing the greatest games of all time article which will be a daily feature!

Mario Party DS to feature Wifi?

A new magazine shot of Mario Party DS has been revealed, and it appears that the Wifi logo is there. We also get a nice looking shot of new artwork for the game. Also, as expected, the game appears to have an E for Everyone rating.

If this news is true, then this is great for a lot of players including me - Online Mario Party has been begged for ever since NWC was announced. If it's true, this may be the first Mario Party game that I've purchased since the Nintendo 64 days (though I did buy Mario Party Advance because it was rather cheap).

Four more hours until poll closes!

Hurry up and cast your vote! Since yesterday 10 people voted on the poll, something I never expected! Also, if you have any suggestions for a new poll, then say so in the coment page (you don't need to be a member and you don't need to give your e-mail address).

More minor Nintendo news (July 18, 2007)

*Camp Hyrule, an enourmous online chat room that takes place every year for the past 13 years will once again take place this year, however in a totally different way. Rather than being able to communicate with people, the only big thing this year is being able to win a life size Link statute...
*Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader seems to be coming to Nintendo DS according to GameFly.
*As expected, Nintendo once again dominated Canada last month.

Anticipated game of the day: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass has already been released in Japan and has been deemed by many as the best Zelda game of all time. If what these people say is true, then logically doesn't that make Phantom Hourglass the BEST game of all time? I'd say so, because undoubtably Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past, and even the Wind Waker are some of the greatest and most notable of games, surpassing classics such as Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Metroid by far. Some may even consider Ocarina of Time to be better than Super Mario 64, though it's generally been accepted that the latter game was and still is more important to the industry.

Now I'm sure that most people were, or even still are skeptical about this game and most definately the way it plays - As you control Link via the stylus; whether it be running around, slashing your sword, or choosing items, you do it all with the DS' stylus. However, most every one who's played the game have said it works brilliantly, and some (MTV) have gone as far as to say that Phantom Hourglass was the best game shown at E3 this year, making it more notable then the hundreds of games shown. Respected game journalist Chris Kohler of Wired magazine stated that the controls feel totally natural, and states that the game is classic Nintendo.

The game also includes a uniqe multiplayer mode that you can not only play with your friends, but also people around the globe via Nintendo's Wifi service.

The game will be released in just a few months, on October 1 here in the Americas, and on October 19 in Europe. No set release date has been announced for the Aussies other than "holiday 2007".

Dem fight'n words.

Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are known for bashing each other's consoles, well, today the latter two have done just that once again, mostly bashing the Wii (as always!).

Microsoft -

"With all due respect to my friends at Nintendo, I don’t think they’ve captured everybody in that consumer segment with the Nintendo Wii. And we’ve sold plenty of Xbox 360s to those people, too. There’s a lot of people who aren’t ready to jump into the next generation yet. And when they are, we think we’ve got the best next-generation option for those folks. And it’s not just about price, it’s got to be about the entire value proposition. For some people, what Wii offers is going to be what they want. For a lot of other people, that’s not what they want. They want a next-generation console system. For them, we’re going to bring it into reach for those folks.

I never look at it as competing with Nintendo and the Wii. I think we’re competing with Nintendo, and Sony, and other entertainment options for that customer segment. We’re gonna go to bat with all of the assets that we have and hopefully for a good chunk of those consumers, that’s gonna be great. We’re not that far out of reach. Our Core system is $299, and that has greater capabilities in my opinion than the Wii does, if that’s what you want."

Sony -

"I think the PS3 is the Surf ‘n Turf. You want the lobster and steak and you’re going to give yourself the treat of getting the best thing on the menu. The PS2 is your favorite burger restaurant — you go there for comfort food and it’s just always good and is a good value.

[As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I’m too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn’t always reliable."

How many of these analogies have we gotten this year? I mean, I seriously think we get about 2 every month!

Bad news for MaC OS X users -

Quote from engadget -

"Look, we're fine with Apple gloating about the security of OS X in their Mac vs. PC adverts. After all, we have yet to see a large-scale worm released into the Macintosh community. However, the fact that a worm hasn't been released on a Windows-esque scale likely has less to do with Apple's superior coding than the size of their market share, i.e., OS X is a smaller target. That might soon change, however. A vulnerability has reportedly been found and more importantly, exploited by an "independent researcher" known only as "InfoSec Sellout." Apparently, a previously undisclosed vulnerability in the OS X mDNSResponder (which Apple has patched before) allowed Sir Sellout to cobble together a worm dubbed "Rape.osx." InfoSec Sellout claims to have released the worm into a controlled environment thereby infecting a network of about 1,500 OS X systems by nabbing root and dumping a text file as an evidentiary foot print. However, the worm's author claims that it can be broadly weaponised with a payload of choice across both PPC and Intel-class Macs with just a bit more work. InfoSec Sellout will disclose the vulnerability to Apple only after his/her "research is complete" and after an appropriate level of compensation (er, InfoSec Ransom?) received. Dubious as that sounds, for better or worse, it's the way the game's currently played. "

Best Buy begins filling their stores with Apple stations

As the image above shows, Best Buy has already began adding the Apple stations in their stores. I don't know about you, but I think it looks quite similar to Apple's very own stores, with a sleek modern white look to it. Very snazzy and clean. By Fall, 200 Best Buy stores will have this new layout.
